Filafriques is a black woman owned gallery, ran by Carine Biley, committed to promote contemporary African art. Faced with the complex issue of cultural identity in an increasingly cosmopolitan world, the creation of the gallery was a matter of urgency. Inspired by questions related to its founder's dual Ivorian-French culture, it invites the public to (re)connect with contemporary Africa, its richness and its diversity. The artist roster is made with natives from different African countries, who have reappropriated cultural key elements to define their singular narratives. 2025 was marked with a dynamic presence on international art fairs with the 1-54's New York & London editions, AKAA and MIRA in Paris, after the 1st year following the opening of the first space of the gallery in Geneva Switzerland, the gallery projects are processing in the vibrant Ivorian capital, rooting the gallery in Africa will be unveiled soon.

Carine Biley and Ngalula Mafwata are pleased to present Sacred Languages: The Metamorphoses, the solo exhibition of Cameroonian photographer and visual artist Martin ABEGA at Filafriques in Geneva.

Presented as part of a collaboration between Filafriques and MAYÌ ARTS, and curated by Ngalula Mafwata, the exhibition brings together a fascinating selection of photographic compositions and works blending photography, textile, embroidery, cowrie shells and charcoal.

Sacred Languages: The Metamorphoses explores processes of transformation unfolding through both body and mind: ordeal, fragility, trace, transmission and regeneration, metaphorically embodied through the female figure.

MALIZA KIASUWA “Rhizomes is a series of sculptures inspired by organic forms and the networks of living things. The ropes evoke roots—invisible bonds that connect beings. Drawing on the concept of the rhizome developed by Gilles Deleuze, these works explore multiplicity, connection, and transformation. Here, nature becomes a metaphor for human complexity. The weaving here is not a collection of threads but a network of relationships between the threads. Everything holds together with a certain fragility." Maliza Kiasuwa

& JOSEPH EZE  Within a wider context of the black hair story that the artist continues to explore, the HEAD IN SPACE series uses lines, layered images and dynamic colours to create fantasies of a culture capable of defying enclosures and tropes. His new series, while still anchored to the Igbo fashion culture of the 70s, attempts to push portraiture and depictions of woven hair to fresh directions. Concealed faces seems to question the concept of presence and immediate recognition and hair stalks mimic clustered forests growing in different directions. The artist tries to work out what's possible between de- emphasizing the expected image and retaining the hair as a subject of focus
